Τον Αύγουστο του 2020 συμμετείχα στο international jury (35 cuppers απο  14  χωρες) του Qima Yemen 2020 Auction απο την Qima Coffee σε συνεργασία με την Alliance for Coffee Excellence, και είχα την ευκαιρία να δοκιμάσω κάποιους απο τους καλύτερους καφέδες που έχει να μας δώσει η Υεμένη. Οι συμμετοχές μου στους αντίστοιχους θεσμούς των διάφορων χωρών παραγωγής καφέ πάντα με ενθουσιάζουν καθώς πάντα βρίσκω πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα την ανακάλυψη ιδιαίτερων καφέδων και γευστικών προφίλ. Όταν δοκίμαζα τους καφέδες της Υεμένης, πάντα με blind tasting όπως γίνεται κατά παράδοση αυτή η διαδικασία, δεν γνώριζα ότι αυτή τη φορά κρυβόταν κάτι ακόμα πιο συναρπαστικό πίσω από αυτό, κάτι καινούργιο που ήρθε για να αλλάξει όσα γνωρίζουμε σήμερα για τη γενεαλογία του καφέ.

Με την ολοκλήρωση του Qima Yemen 2020, με το private auction απο την Qima Coffee και την κοινοποίηση των αποτελεσμάτων, όλοι οι κριτές λάβαμε γνώση οτι πήραμε μέρος σε κάτι ακόμα μεγαλύτερο απο την ανάδειξη των καλύτερων καφέδων μιας χώρας παραγωγής καφέ. Πήραμε ουσιαστικά μέρος στην επικύρωση μιας εξαιρετικά σημαντικής ανακάλυψης.

Σε έρευνα που πραγματοποιήθηκε από τον F. Sheibani της Qima Coffee σε συνεργασία με τον C. Montagnon της επιστημονικής ομάδας της RD2 Vision  και της οποίας τα αποτελέσματα δημοσιεύτηκαν στις 15 Φεβρουαρίου του 2021 και μπορείτε να διαβάσετε αναλυτικά εδώ , ανακαλύφθηκε μια καινούργια για τα δεδομένα μας μέχρι τώρα, αλλά γενεαλογικά πολύ παλιά ομάδα ποικιλιών καφέ Arabica, η Yemenia – όπως ονομάστηκε.

Ο καφές πρωτοεμφανίστηκε στο Νότιο Σουδάν και την Αιθιοπία, όμως καλλιεργήθηκε συστηματικά για πρώτη φορά στην Υεμένη. Όλες οι γνωστές μας Arabica ποικιλίες μεταφέρθηκαν από την Αιθιοπία, στην Υεμένη και μετέπειτα από εκεί, σε όλο τον κόσμο. O σκοπός της μελέτης που διεξήχθη ήταν να διαπιστωθεί πόσες απο τις γνωστές μας ποικιλίες υπάρχουν ακόμα στην Υεμένη και τι αξία μπορούν να προσδώσουν στους ντόπιους παραγωγούς. Οι ερευνητές βρήκαν όλες τις γνωστές “ομάδες¨ ποικιλιών, τα SL, τα Typica-Bourbon και όλες τις ποικιλίες που έδωσε η Αιθιοπία. Με έκπληξη όμως ανακάλυψαν και μια καινούργια ομάδα, την Yemenia, για την οποία δεν υπάρχουν καταγραφές στον γνωστό μέχρι τώρα χάρτη του καφέ.

Η Yemenia, όπως ονομάστηκε, χαρακτηρίστηκε ως «μητέρα» ενός καινούργιου πληθυσμού δέντρων Arabica, και αντιπροσωπεύει έναν ωκεανό γενεαλογικών χαρακτηριστικών και μελλοντικών ποικιλιών  που έχουν την δυνατότητα να αναδιαμορφώσουν το μέλλον του καφέ Arabica.  Θα μπορούσε να είναι μια ομάδα δέντρων που δεν μετοίκησε ποτέ σε άλλο σημείο του κόσμου, ή θα μπορούσε να είναι αποτέλεσμα μεταγενέστερων γενετικών μεταλλάξεων των δέντρων μέσα στην περιοχή της Υεμένης ανα τους αιώνες.

Στην γευστική αξιολόγησή που πραγματοποιήσαμε για το Qima Yemen 2020 Auction πραγματοποιήσαμε στην πραγματικότητα και αξιολόγηση του  cup quality της Yemenia το οποίο ξεπέρασε τις προσδοκίες, καθώς απο τους 15 καλύτερους καλύτερους καφέδες που επιλέχθηκαν άπο την ομάδα των κριτών, οι 10 ανήκαν στην ομάδα της Yemenia με κάποια απο τα lot της να φτάνουν μέχρι και τους 96 πόντους.

Πολλά έχουν να ερευνηθούν ακόμα για την Yemenia, και ένα καίριο ερώτημα είναι αν θα μπορούσε η Yemenia να είναι η απάντηση στο μείζον πρόβλημα της ανθεκτικότητας των Arabica δέντρων στην κλιματική αλλαγή και τις ασθένειες στις οποίες είναι επιρρεπή όλα τα γνωστά μέχρι τώρα δέντρα, καθώς δείχνει να ευδοκιμεί με ευκολία στο σκληρό κλίμα της Υεμένης. Το σίγουρο είναι ότι είναι μόνο η αρχή ενός συναρπαστικού ερευνητικού ταξιδιού που θα ανοίξει νέους ορίζοντες στην γνώση μας για τον καφέ.

Yemenia: Can the past show us the future?

In August 2020 I was part of the International Jury (35 cuppers from 14 countries) of Qima Yemen 2020 Auction, organized by Qima Coffee in collaboration with Alliance for Coffee Excellence, and I had the opportunity to taste some of the best coffees Yemen has to offer. My participation in those institutional events of the different coffee producing countries, always excites me, as I find the discovery of special coffees and unique coffee profiles very interesting. As I was going through the process of tasting the Yemen coffees, with a blind tasting procedure as it is required in such cases, I wasn’t aware that this time there was something even bigger behind this process, something that is here to change what we know so far on coffee genetics.

Upon completion of Qima Yemen 2020, and with the Qima Coffee’s private auction and the results’ announcement, all the judges, myself included, were notified that we actually took part in something even bigger than raising this country’s best coffees. We took part in the validation of a very important discovery.

In a research conducted by F. Sheibani of Qima Coffee in collaboration with C. Montagnon from the scientific team of RD2 Vision, the results of which were published on February 15, 2021 and you can read in detail here, a new -for the information and knowledge on coffee tha we hold today- , but genealogically old “group” of coffee varieties was discovered. It was given the name Yemenia.

Coffee first appeared in South Sudan and Ethiopia, but was systematically cultivated for the first time in Yemen. All our best known Arabica varieties were transported from Ethiopia to Yemen and then from there to the rest of the world. The purpose of the study was to find out how many of our known varieties still exist in Yemen and what value could they bring to local producers. Researchers found all the known “groups” of varieties; the SL, the Typica-Bourbon, the Ethiopia accessions. Surprisingly, they also discovered a new group, Yemenia, for which there are no records on the hitherto known coffee map.

Yemenia, as it was named, has been described as the “mother” of a new population of Arabica trees, and represents an ocean of genealogical characteristics and future varieties that have the potential to reshape the future of Arabica coffee. It could be a group of trees that have was never moved to another part of the world, or it could be the result of later genetic mutations of trees within the Yemeni region over the centuries.

While taste evaluating the coffees of Qima Yemen 2020 Auction, we actually made at the same time an evaluation of the Yemenia cup quality. And it exceeded expectations. 10 out of the 15 best coffees selected by the jury, belonged to the Yemenia group with some of its lots scoring up to 96.

There are plenty yet to be investigated and studied about Yemenia, and a crucial question will be whether Yemenia could be the solution to the increasing problem of all the known –until know- Arabica trees being non-resilient to climate changes but also susceptible to the same diseases, since Yemenia seems to seamlessly thrive in the harsh climate of Yemen. What is certain is that this is only the beginning of a fascinating research journey that will for sure break new grounds in coffee genetics and our so far knowledge on it.
